No matter how much we prepare for hurricane season, many can still experience storm damage to property they own. From your automobiles to your homes, to out buildings and more, winds and other weather related storm damage can occur, and be hard to deal with. If it happens, it is important to take certain steps to make sure the process of repair goes as smoothly as possible.

Important Steps To Take For Repairs

• When possible, and only if you can do so safely, take photographs of damaged property and contents before making any emergency repairs.

• Contact contractors to board up any broken windows and openings in the roof or walls of your home.

• You should consider protecting your property from further damage by removing any water, if safely possible.

• In the event that any carpet and/or padding is removed, keep a square foot of the carpet and/or padding so your adjuster can inspect for quality and texture.

• Keep an accurate record of any repair expenses.

Protect your Personal Property

• Separate items which may be cleaned and/or repaired from those that can’t.

• List items that can’t be saved (include brand name, age, today’s replacement cost, model or serial number).

• Do not discard items for which you will submit a claim until a claim adjuster says it’s okay.

• If your home is uninhabitable:

• Find temporary housing for you and your family.

• Discuss your coverage with your adjuster; while advance payment for living expenses may be available, this expense may not be covered by your policy.

• DO NOT enter into long-term leases until you talk to an adjuster.

• Keep all receipts associated with the temporary housing, meals, and other miscellaneous expenses, which are in addition to your regular expenses.

Create a Personal Inventory

• For your future protection, it would be a good idea to make a detailed photographic inventory of all your personal belongings. This list will help your claim adjuster in handling your claim.

• The inventory should be room-by-room, giving complete descriptions of the damaged property, including brand names, model numbers, age, purchase price, and place of purchase.
